What is WIDEMEKI?

WIDEMEKI is a dual-view food X-ray inspection system manufactured by Mekitec for wide, low-profile packages such as bakery pillow packs. Two generator-detector pairs create parallel, partly overlapping X-ray images to inspect the package across its width.

Detection performance is application-specific. Mekitec confirms it by testing the actual food, package, target foreign materials, line conditions and reject configuration.

X-Ray Quality Control for Wide Products

The WIDEMEKI X-ray inspection system is designed for food packages that are significantly wider than standard consumer packaged food products. It provides bakers and other food production manufacturers with automated X-ray inspection across the package width.

The bakery industry has been one of the main focus areas when designing the system, since there are applications where the food products are extremely wide, such as pillow packs. WIDEMEKI combines two parallel and partly overlapping X-ray images from two separate X-ray generator and detector pairs. This keeps the distance between the parts to a minimum, which removes the need for a high-power generator, reduces the system size and energy consumption, and improves the image quality and foreign object detection performance.

Food X-ray inspection and quality-control functions

Foreign-object detection

The system creates an X-ray image and can be configured to detect foreign objects made of materials that create sufficient X-ray contrast, including metal, stone, glass, calcified bone and some dense plastics. Detectability depends on the object's material, size, shape, orientation and location as well as the food, package and line conditions.

MEKI AI quality checks

With MEKI AI, the two paired X-ray images are evaluated together against the validated inspection criteria. MEKI AI quality checks will include counting and filling, missing or excess product, seal inspection, clip inspection, cavern detection and organic-material detection. Functions are selected specifically for the actual wide-package geometry and application requirements.

How it works

A wide package enters the inspection zone. Two parallel generator-detector pairs create paired and partly overlapping images, which MEKI AI evaluates against the validated inspection criteria.

Questions and answers

How does WIDEMEKI inspect wide food packages?

Two parallel generator-detector pairs create paired and partly overlapping X-ray images across the package width. MEKI AI evaluates the combined inspection view using the validated product and package criteria.

What are WIDEMEKI’s maximum published product sizes?

The published physical product combinations are 680 × 65 mm and 600 × 120 mm. The 692 mm and 732 mm graph values are zero-height envelope points, not physical package rectangles.
