Swiss Confectionery Producer Improves Quality with Modern X-ray System

Founded in 1905, Patiswiss, a Swiss confectionery producer and distributor, has established a well known brand and a broad customer network domestically and internationally. Its business philosophy is inspired by quality; this can be seen in its traditional artisan skills, knowledge resources, processing methods, and focus on raw materials, all while having long-lasting and personal relationships with the producers. This is why numerous influencers in the confectionery industry trust Patiswiss’ high-quality, semi-finished goods.

In the confectionery industry where brand and customer loyalty are key competition advantages, Patiswiss’ clients are both quality-conscious and demanding. To ensure its own deliverables and fulfill customers’ rigorous quality standards, Patiswiss was looking for a modern food quality control system.

Patiswiss’ products, packaging, and business objectives increased the requirements and challenges for the inspection system alternatives. For instance, the company utilizes the standard aluminum bag packaging, which limits the use of metal detection technology.

The main challenge of the inspected product is in its content composition. The mix of sugar, kernels, and other ingredients form a very busy and tight mass. Besides, some items in Patiswiss’ product portfolio are relatively large and may weigh even up to 10kg. Inspecting such products, so Patswiss’ philosophy is inspired by quality; this can be seen in its traditional artisan skills, knowledge resources, processing methods, and focus on raw materials, all while having longlasting and personal relationships with the producers and with an X-ray inspection system from Mekitec. that they fulfill the high standards, requires sophisticated technology combined with accurate software algorithms.

Efficient Solution For A Complex Product

In May 2014, during the Interpack exhibition in Düsseldorf, Germany, Patiswiss met the representatives of X-Ray food inspection company Mekitec. With previous experience in confectionery X-Ray inspection, Mekitec found a suitable solution with an optimal value-price proposition. “The main benefits of MEKI systems are the value-price proposition, the high quality finishing of the machinery, and easy intuitive user interface,” says Erich Schuepbach, Head of Production and member of the executive board of Patiswiss. The first MIDMEKI, a food inspection system designed for medium to large-sized packaged goods, was delivered in the summer 2014, only a few weeks after initial contact at Interpack. Patiswiss’ main concerns are foreign objects — mainly metal, stones, and glass. X-Ray technologies can effectively detect and remove these contaminants, even from large aluminum bags.

Fulfilling Customer Quality Needs — Now And In The Future

After the initial Mekitec service set up the system and trained the employees to operate it seamlessly. “Mekitec, as a company, has always been very positive and prompt in communication and support,” Schuepbach continues. “Patiswiss is a very quality-driven and professional organization. Thus, it was important to find the right solution together with them. Detection performance and total lifecycle cost were of course important parameters,” says Lars Oehlandt, Sales Director at Mekitec. The X-Ray system does not only detect and remove the foreign objects or faulty products, but it also gathers and processes the data from production cycles in a reportable format. This enables Patiswiss to gather valuable process information to develop its production quality to a higher standard. “Patiswiss’ mission is to fulfill our customer’s quality needs in the best possible way — now and in the future. X-Ray will play an important role in execution,” ends Schuepbach.
